Wear and Replacement of Stockings

donning_stockings.jpgWhen to Wear:  Put them on in the morning when you first get out of bed.  You may take off the compression stockings at night when you go to sleep.

Putting them on:  If you are having trouble putting on your stockings, try some of the following methods:

  • Put powder on your feet.
  • Wear rubber gloves, like those used for housework.
  • Wear nylon stockings before putting on your compression stockings.
  • Use a special stocking pull-on aid available from Wright & Filippis.

stocking_pull_on.jpgFingers:  Be careful putting them on.  Do not put your finger or fingernails through them when putting them on.

Tears:  Do not pull so hard that you rip the stockings.

Rings:  Remove your rings before putting them on.

Socks:  Wear socks over them so that your shoes do not wear holes in them.

Stretching:  Do not wear them when they have stretched out of shape.  Get new ones.  They will no longer provide compression.

Replacements:  Replace them every three to four months.

Weight Change:  Your stocking size will stay the same, unless your weight changes by at least 10 pounds.
