It is very important to PREVENT SKIN BREAKDOWN (sore, raw skin). The skin under the brace needs to be toughened.
To protect the skin:
 |
-
Bathe or shower daily.
-
Always wear some type of form-fitting undershirt or t-shirt under the brace. The sleeveless men’s tank top is usually preferred by the girls. Suggested brands include Carters (for younger children), Fruit of the Loom, Sears, Hanes, Verdon (Jordan Marsh’s brand). We also provide torso liners which your insurance company may cover.
-
The skin will need frequent observation when the brace is first used. Be sure to look for red marks. Most times this is normal.
-
Initially, DO NOT USE CREAMS OR LOTIONS under the brace. If dry skin occurs, call your orthotist for suggestions. You may use a humidifier, if necessary.
-
Report skin problems to your orthotist who may suggest an alternate skin care technique.
-
If you wear the brace loosely, it will move around and possibly rub against the skin, causing skin problems. WEAR YOUR BRACE AS TIGHTLY AS POSSIBLE. This is the most effective way and will cause the least irritation.
-
You may need to make an earlier appointment if brace or skin problems continue.
-
Initially, the brace may be loosened slightly during meals, if needed. Eating smaller portions more frequently may help you.
-
If you experience a skin breakdown (sore, red, raw skin), the brace must be removed until the skin heals - one day or more. If this happens, call your orthotist. The problem might be solved over the phone.
-
Sometimes the skin over the waist and the hips gets darker. This is common and is not a problem. When the brace treatment is over, your skin will return to a normal color.
-
Good skin care requires proper brace cleaning.
