If you have already been diagnosed with pre-diabetes there are ways to reduce your risk of becoming diabetic. Lower your risk by doing any one (or more) of the following:

1. Eat a maximum of 30% calories from fat. An average of 50 to 60 grams of fat per day is considered “low fat” for most people.

2. Saturated fats should make up less than 10% of your total daily fat grams. Remember, a slice of cheese contains 6 grams.

3. Get 150 minutes of exercise a week. Active muscles are more receptive to insulin produced by the body. A brisk walk is great exercise.

4. Eat 15 grams of dietary fiber per day by enjoying fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, legumes and whole grains.

5. Eat 3 servings of whole grains each day. Whole grains slow the absorption of blood sugar and can easily be found in foods labeled “source of whole grains.”

6. Lose some weight. Losing just 10 to 20 pounds can slow or prevent the onset of diabetes. How do you lose the weight? Eat less fat, get more whole grains and dietary fiber, and do a little exercise.
