New, experimental DNA vaccines could be the future of immunization, but they have not been effective up to now because they have been inefficient in producing antibodies.
German scientists say the use of a vibrating needle, like a tattooing needle, may be more effective than a traditional needle. Studies done on mice indicate that tattooing needles were more effective in getting a response from their immune systems. A vibrating needle produced 16 times more antibodies than a straight injection into muscle tissue. Why? It may be that the greater damage to the tissue causes a greater immune response by the body. This technique needs more study before use in humans but could be initially used for routine animal vaccinations.
