What is a scoliosis spinal orthosis?
A scoliosis spinal orthosis, more commonly called a brace, is an external support for your spine. It is designed to use gentle, constant pressure over time to painlessly prevent any further progression of curvature of the spine. Each brace is custom designed to treat the patient’s individual curvature. The two most common types are the Milwaukee Orthosis (CTLSO) and the Boston Corrective, or low profile, Thoraco-Lumbar Sacral Orthosis (TLSO). The Milwaukee Orthosis supports your spine from the neck region through the mid-back and tailbone. The Boston Corrective TLSO supports your spine from the mid-back through the tailbone.
About Your Orthosis
-
The orthosis is to halt progression of a deformity of your spine. This may be scoliosis (a lateral curve) or Kyphosis (a round back).
-
When you first begin to wear your orthosis, it will seem uncomfortable and confining. It takes a short while (usually about 1 month) to feel comfortable.
-
Your orthosis must be worn 23 hours a day, unless otherwise instructed by your physician.
-
You can adjust your schedule at home for which is the best hour for you to be out of your orthosis. It is permissible to save the time for gym class or personal care at the end of the day.
-
During your first week with the orthosis, you will have many questions so don’t hesitate to ask.
