Taking Your Treatment
-
Find a suitable location where you can sit in a comfortable position that will allow you to take a deep breath. Place the compressor on a flat surface.
-
Pour the prescribed medicine into the cup, screw on the top and attach the mouthpiece or mask. Connect one end of the tubing to the nipple located on the bottom of the medicine cup and the other end to the nipple on the machine.
With the nebulizer plugged into an approved outlet and resting on the rubber feet located on the back, turn the power switch on.
- Check to see that the nebulizer is creating a steady mist. If not, ensure the tubing is securely connected at both ends and the medicine cup’s cap is on tightly.
-
Place the mouthpiece between your teeth and on top of your tongue and inhale through your mouth. If you are using a mask, position it over your nose and mouth and adjust the straps to fit snugly, and then inhale through your mouth.
- Breathe normally through your mouth. Your physician may advise you to periodically inhale slowly and deeply with up to a five second breath hold. This will allow the maximum amount of medication to reach your lungs.
- Continue your breathing treatment until the medication is gone, usually 5 to 15 minutes. Periodically tap the side of the medicine cup to cause any residual droplets to fall to the bottom of the cup. If you need to cough or rest during the treatment, turn off the machine in order to save the medication.
After Your Treatment
Turn the power switch off and unplug the compressor.
- If needed, cough several times to loosen and bring up any mucus.
- Clean the medicine cup and mouthpiece/mask.
Cleaning and decontamination of respiratory therapy equipment in the home is of major concern. All cleaning and disinfecting should be performed in a clean environment. We do not recommend performing this in dirty, dusty or smoky areas, after vacuuming or under an open window.
-
Change the filter every six months.
