OC Care of Humidifier Bottle

ocadapter4583.jpgDAILY CLEANING & DISINFECTION
To prevent contamination of the humidifier bottle and possible infection, a simple but effective cleaning procedure must be conducted daily to prevent infection. If a water trap is being used with the tubing, you should remove and follow the same cleaning procedure. With proper care and cleaning, these items should last one month.

Humidifier bottles are a disposable item that needs to be discarded and replaced every four weeks.
STEP 1 – Wash hands thoroughly.

STEP 2 – Switch to your back-up oxygen system whenever cleaning or refilling the humidifier bottle and turn the concentrator power off.

STEP 3 – Remove the entire humidifier bottle from the concentrator and discard any remaining water.

STEP 4 – Wash the entire humidifier bottle in a solution of mild dish soap and warm water (NO anti-bacterial soaps).

STEP 5 – Rinse the bottle thoroughly and shake off the excess water.

STEP 6Mix one part white vinegar and three parts water in a small pan or bowl and soak the entire humidifier bottle for 30 minutes.

STEP 7 – Discard the vinegar solution.

STEP 8 – Run warm tap water for three minutes, then rinse the bottle thoroughly and shake off the excess water.

STEP 9 – Refill the bottle with distilled water to a level between the minimum and maximum fill lines. Do not fill above the maximum line as too much water can cause moisture to collect in the oxygen tubing. If the level drops below the minimum line, the bubbling will stop and you will not receive humidified oxygen.  Photo in Patient Instruction Book of water filling humidifier bottle.

STEP 10 – Screw the jar back onto the lid tightly. Be certain that the jar is screwed on straight! Cross-threading will cause oxygen to escape along the edge instead of coming through the tubing.
