The portable unit is a smaller unit that can be filled from your reservoir and carried with you. Portable units may be carried using a handle or carrying strap, or with some units, transported in a lightweight cart. Depending on the size, the unit will weigh between 3 and 10 pounds when full and supply oxygen for four to eight hours. Actual times will vary depending on your liter flow.
Fill your portable unit approximately 20 minutes before you need to use it. This will allow time to make sure your portable unit is fully pressurized and ready for use. When your stationary reservoir has been refilled, you must wait three hours before attempting to fill your portable unit. This ensures that your stationary reservoir has created enough pressure to fill the portable unit.
Always check the amount of liquid oxygen in your unit before using it. When the portable unit is not being used, its contents will evaporate within 24 hours and your portable unit will need to be refilled. Most portable units have a strap indicator that shows the content level. Simply hold the portable unit by the strap and push the bottom of the unit so that it is straight up and down and read the level on the gauge. Your Wright & Filippis technician will show you how to check the contents of your portable unit.
Filling A Portable Unit
It is very important that both connectors involved in the filling process be clean and dry before you begin the filling process. Failure to clean the connectors prior to filling can result in the portable unit freezing to the reservoir.
BOTTOM FILL PORTABLE UNITS
STEP 1: Wipe the filling connectors on both the stationary reservoir and the portable unit with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth. These connections must be dry, or the two units could freeze together.
STEP 2: Turn the flow control on the portable unit to 0.
STEP 3: Align the female fill connector on the bottom of the portable unit to the male fill connector on the top of the stationary unit. Push down firmly on the portable unit until the portable unit fully engages with the fill connector on the stationary unit. While maintaining downward pressure on the portable unit with one hand, pull the lever on the portable unit to open the fill valve. You will hear the air escaping from the portable unit.
STEP 4: When the portable unit starts to emit a steady stream of oxygen, it is full.
STEP 5: Release the fill lever and remove the portable unit from the stationary reservoir. If the unit will not easily separate from the stationary, hit the release button located on the top of your liquid reservoir. This should separate the two units.
STEP 6: Check the contents indicator to make sure your unit is filled.
Note: If the stationary reservoir spews a white vapor out of the fill connector after you remove the portable, immediately reconnect the portable and wait 30 minutes for the connections to thaw, before removing the portable. If a steady stream of liquid flows out of the reservoir, stay away from the reservoir, open a window in the room and call Wright & Filippis immediately at (800) 482-0222.
SIDE FILL PORTABLE UNITS
STEP 1: Wipe the filling connectors on both the stationary reservoir and the portable unit with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth. These connections must be dry, or the two units could freeze together.
STEP 2: Hold the portable unit next to the stationary unit with the male fill connector on the portable facing the female fill connector on the liquid stationary. Tilt the portable counterclockwise to a 45 degree angle and insert the male connector of the portable unit into the female connector located on the side of the stationary reservoir. Once inserted, rotate the portable unit clockwise until the pin locks in place and cannot rotate any further. You should not have to force it to rotate.
STEP 3: Turn the flow control knob to 0.
STEP 4: Open the fill valve by pulling the fill lever or, if equipped, turning the valve key. You will hear the air escaping from the portable unit.
STEP 5: When the portable unit starts to emit a steady stream of oxygen, it is full.
STEP 6: Stop the filling process by releasing the fill lever or, if equipped, turning the valve key to close it.
STEP 7: Remove the side fill unit by rotating it counterclockwise.
STEP 8: Check the contents indicator to make sure your unit is filled.
Note: If the stationary reservoir spews a white vapor out of the fill connector after you remove the portable, immediately reconnect the portable, wait 30 minutes for the connections to thaw, and then remove the portable. If a steady stream of liquid flows out of the reservoir, stay away from the reservoir, open a window in the room and call Wright & Filippis immediately at (800) 482-0222.
After attaching a nasal cannula to your portable unit, turn the flow control knob to the number that your doctor has prescribed for you. Do not use any other flow rate other than the rate prescribed for you. When not in use, turn the flow control knob to 0. You should change your cannula every two weeks.
OPTIMAL USE TIME OF PORTABLE UNITS
Your actual time may vary, depending on conditions and breath rate.
At a flow rate of 2 liters per minute:
Helios 300: 8 hours on pulse dose
Helios Marathon: 17 hours on pulse dose or 5.5 hours on continuous flow
Spirit 300: 7 hours on pulse dose or 1.5 hours on continuous flow
Hi-Flow: 8 hours on continuous flow
EasyMate: 8 hours on pulse dose
