Using the Phototherapy Unit

  1. Using the Phototherapy UnitBe sure that the baby is in a comfortable position and that the vest is properly secured. Turn the light level switch on the front of the machine to the desired level. Normally this will be kept in the “2” or “High” position.
  2. Turn the unit on by pressing the power switch Using the Phototherapy Unitlocated on the front of the illuminator box. The two lights on the front of the box will light. The green light indicates that the power is on. The yellow light is a system alert light that checks to see that both the primary and backup bulbs are operational. The yellow light normally will go out after a few seconds*.
  3. Leave the light on for the prescribed length of time (Usually 24 hours except when bathing the baby). Turn the light off when it is not on the baby.
  4. Using the Phototherapy UnitCheck the baby’s temperature every four hours and contact the baby’s doctor if there is more than a two degree change in the baby’s temperature.

It is normal for the baby to have more frequent bowel movements. The stools may be dark brown or dark green in color as the bilirubin is being processed and excreted.  For answers to other Frequently Asked Questions, click here.

The doctor will normally have the baby tested daily to check the baby’s bilirubin level. When it has decreased to an acceptable level, the doctor will order the treatments to be stopped. When the treatment is no longer required, contact Wright & Filippis to make arrangements to have the phototherapy unit picked up.

*The phototherapy unit uses only one light at a time. If the primary bulb is burned out, the machine will automatically switch to the backup bulb and the yellow system alert light will blink on and off. This does not affect the output of the unit, but is an alert that one of the bulbs will need to be replaced during the next service opportunity.

Care of your Phototherapy Unit
If the light panel becomes soiled, unplug the illuminator box and wipe the panel down with dishwashing soap. Do not use any abrasive cleaner. Do not immerse the panel in water or any other liquid.

Change the panel cover vests only when they become soiled. The unit comes with five vests. This should be enough for the duration of the treatment.
