Juan Carlos Ramirez: Young Man Has New Opportunity to Enjoy Life
Young Man Has NEW OPPORTUNITY to Enjoy Life
Orthotist Tim Finley checks the brace for proper fit.

Juan Carlos Ramirez and his family traveled to Detroit this past summer for the International Science & Engineering Fair at Cobo Center. And thanks to the caring efforts of several Michiganians, including Wright & Filippis, the 16-year-old boy returned to his native Peru with a greater opportunity to enjoy life.

Juan Carlos has been in a sheelchair since his family was brutally ambushed on a Peru road eight years ago -- an attack that left his father dead and young Juan Carlos a paraplegic. Before coming to Detroit, he had long outgrown the heavy metal braces that supported his legs. In fact, Juan Carlos recently suffered a leg fracture because he did not have adequate braces (the fracture has since healded improperly, leaving him with one leg longer than the other).

During Juan Carlos' stay in Detroit, Wright & Filippis orthotist Tim Finley fitted him with the foot orthosis and lightweight leg braces that he so desperately needed.

Various other organizations, including International Lions Club, joined Wright & Filippis in helping to ensure that Juan Carlos received the quality medical care that is often taken for granted in this country -- demonstrating once again the compassionate and caring side of the people in our community.
