Spotlight on SWASH

The Swash Orthosis prevents scissoring when walking.
Wright & Filippis recently sponsored an educational seminar presented by Camp Healthcare. The seminar provided continuing education credits for the Wright & Filippis clinical staff, in the areas of biomechanics, gait, and patient management.

One focus of the seminar was the SWASH (Standing, Walking, And Sitting Hip) Orthosis, which is a Dynamic Orthotic Hip Abduction orthosis. It provides constant support throughout the day – whether standing, sitting, walking or crawling. The SWASH Orthosis is designed to help the quality of ambulation in children who have Cerebral Palsy and walk with a scissor gait. It also improves the patients' use of hands when sitting by giving them a solid base while seated.

The Swash Orthosis provides the child a more upright stance.
When children with CP stand, their spine is frequently flexed and hip joints abducted. The SWASH Orthosis provides them with a more stable and upright stance, thus decreasing energy consumption.

With a scissor gait, walking capacity is impeded because ambulation is more difficult and requires a great deal of energy. The SWASH prevents scissoring, so that the child can walk more efficiently.

The SWASH Orthosis also reduces hip adduction and internal femoral rotation associated with high adductor tone. It improves hip alignment and allows normal range of motion.

The SWASH Orthosis is the ideal brace to treat scissor gait, adduction and abduction. It prevents adduction while standing and walking, and allows abduction while sitting. The SWASH Orthosis self adjusts for all positions.
