Walking 13 miles to raise money is not unusual for Ray Barlond, a prosthetist in Battle Creek. Since 2001, Ray has been taking the annual walk to raise money for abused and neglected children of Southwest Michigan. The walk is to coincide with a local radio station's roof-sit, which is also to raise money for the children. This year, Ray walked behind his wife's car, stopping at pre-determined locations to collect money. Ray typically raises between $500 and $800 each year. "Each year, I try to make the walk a little farther than the year before," said Ray, "and each year I strive to raise a little more money for the kids."
