Reaching Out to Help Others
Briana Patterson is helping to make the dream of her late fiancé, Robert Lee, come true. Patterson and Lee, a former Wright & Filippis employee, would help the elderly and physically challenged by doing their grocery shopping and house cleaning for them. Now Patterson has turned their good deed into a business. The business, Jitney Express, is run by Patterson, her sisters and an on-call staff of five people. If someone needs help with groceries or house cleaning, he/she just picks up the phone and makes a call. For those needing groceries, the list is given to a Jitney Express employee and the groceries are then purchased and delivered to the person's home. Payment is made at the time of delivery. "We do all of our shopping at Farmer Jack, Kroger and Meijer because those are the stores that the elderly are used to," said Patterson. Jitney Express officially opened as a business on June 1, 2005 and covers the Detroit area. "If we can get to you, we'll be there," added Patterson. They currently build their business on word of mouth referrals, but hope to be able to start advertising in the near future. The concept was created by Patterson and her late fiancé Robert Lee. Lee was a Wright & Filippis employee until he was killed by a drunk driver in 2002. If you would like more information about Jitney Express, or if you know someone in Detroit who could benefit from these services, call (313) 341-0622. |
