Michigan Health and Rehab Conference Addresses
Issues Facing Rehab Patients May 18, 2006 found more than 200 people gathered at the Troy Marriott Conference Center for the Michigan Health and Rehabilitation Conference sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Wright & Filippis, and the Filippis Foundation. This year's Health & Rehab Conference was designed as a dynamic interdisciplinary program intended to address the multiple issues facing rehabilitation patients. Brenda Elsagher, speaker and author, presented the morning keynote entitled, Humor & Healing from the Patient's Perspective. She spoke from personal experience about using humor to lead to open communication and discuss a taboo subject, as well as the medical benefits humor. Breakout sessions offered 11 choices to attendees and they took advantage of the opportunities. The programs included neuro-anatomy; cultural diversity in the workplace; case management issues; billing protocols for home medical equipment, orthotics and prosthetics; wheelchair seating; and microprocessor prosthetic knees, among other topics. The afternoon keynote session was titled, It's Your Legacy... LIVE IT! and was presented by Renee Wall Rongen. In her speech, Rongen described life line living - creating balance and harmony with career and home life, and shared real-life stories to provide practical examples of humor, joy, balance and humbleness. She also discussed how to create an environment within individual departments that focus on life care and personal gifts. The program was appreciated and enjoyed by everyone who attended. A special thanks to the conference team at Wright & Filippis and to Blue Cross Blue Shield for working so hard to put on such a successful program. |
