There is a famous quote by psychologist and philosopher William James: "The great use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it." This is something that I know was accomplished in my father's lifetime. Tony Filippis Sr., the founder of Wright & Filippis, dedicated his life to helping others in need. It is not surprising that after his passing, those he touched and inspired have returned the favor. Recognizing the importance of my father's lifelong mission, the Detroit Lions have re-named their celebrity bocce tournament in honor of him. The Tony Filippis Memorial Bocce Tournament is a fundraising event that will benefit the Athletes with Disabilities Hall of Fame, Detroit Lions Charities, and various other non-profits throughout Michigan. In today's society, people are quick to point fingers at sports teams for their lack of on-field success or the amount of money they are paid, but when I look at the Lions, I see an organization committed to making everyone successful. In the last 17 years, they've given more than $4 million to local non-profits and have played a major role in a variety of recreational and educational initiatives throughout the region. Don't think the Lions are champions in our community? Just ask any of the middle school students who attend the Detroit Lions Academy... or the kids who receive new opportunities through the Boys & Girls Club... or the young athletes with disabilities who will now receive college scholarships. The Lions organization is a driving force behind these and many other programs. Given the economic challenges currently facing everyone in our state, their presence and assistance is needed more than ever. We're fortunate to have the Detroit Lions in our community, and 'm thankful that they share our passion for helping others. Sincerely, A.J. Filippis |
