Letter from the Prez

This November marks the 9th annual Athletes with Disabilities Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony. Established by the late Tony Filippis Sr., better known as BIG TONY, this unique organization celebrates the achievements of outstanding athletes and community leaders who have achieved their goals while becoming a symbol of hope and inspiration for others.

The Hall of Fame's mission is to honor athletes with disabilities who have demonstrated achievement in sports and are positive role models in the community, as well as to educate the public about sports for the disabled. The Hall of Fame also strives to support recreational and educational opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

This year's class of inductees includes James Lagerstrom, Jerry Sarasin and Darryl Waller. Kevin Konfara will receive the Hall of Fame's "Rising Star Award", and the "Lifetime Achievement Award" will be presented to Leonard Sawisch, PhD. Ted Lindsay, former Detroit Red Wing and Hockey Hall of Famer, will serve as Honorary Chair, and this year's Keynote Speaker will be Dave Kiley, Paralympic gold medalist and NWBA athlete. The event will be emceed once again by "Big Al" Muskavito from Oldies 104.3 WOMC.

As I write this, reality sets in and tears begin to form as I think that this will be the first Hall of Fame event I will walk to the podium without Tony by my side. That is why I cannot express enough how truly appreciative I am for the great efforts people have made to keep my father's dream alive, including the board members, committee chairs, sponsors, volunteers and everyone who has supported the Hall of Fame. Most importantly, I would like to thank the athletes who continue to inspire us with their courage and dedication.

Sincerely,
A.J. Filippis
