National Breast Cancer
By Pam Lupo Filippis, CO Wright & Filippis chose Knowledge is Strength as the slogan to represent the Post Breast Surgery Division because it exemplifies the belief that knowledge strengthens a woman's recovery after breast surgery. Cutbacks in funding within hospitals as well as with private cancer charities have resulted in the decline of pre-op patient education, which included important psychological counseling and valuable product education. These products, which are essential to post operative recovery with a positive outcome, include: immediate post-op camisoles and soft forms, lymphedema care, breast replacement (partial or full), and bras. Wright & Filippis created 30 educational kits to assist medical settings throughout the state in pre surgery education. According to the American Cancer Society, it is estimated that about 178,480 women in the U.S. will be found to have invasive breast cancer this year alone. About 40,460 women will die from the disease this year. Right now there are slightly over 2 million women living in the United States who have been treated for breast cancer. The first step in fighting breast cancer is educating oneself as much as possible. Cancer is a malignant tumor that grows in one or both breasts. Breast cancer usually develops in the ducts or lobules, also know as the milk-producing areas of the breast. It is considered a heterogeneous disease, meaning that it is a different disease in different women, in different age groups and has different cell populations within the tumor itself. Generally, it is much more aggressive in younger women. Breast cancer is much less common in males and in 2007 the American Cancer Society estimates that 2,030 new cases will be diagnosed among men.
