A Quarter-Century and Counting!

Now in Its 25th Year, the Gene Filippis Memorial Benefit Continues to Support Local Charities

This year's Gene Filippis Memorial Golf Benefit celebrates much more than a special anniversary in 2009 – it symbolizes an important and impressive milestone in the history of the even
t.

The golf benefit, scheduled for Monday, June 1 at Great Oaks Country Club in Rochester, will once again allow Wright & Filippis and the Filippis Foundation to continue their mission of supporting a variety of critical community-based programs.

"This is a testimony to the commitment and hard work by thousands of people who have contributed to our success," said A.J. Filippis, President of Wright & Filippis. "Even during challenging times, we've received unbelievable support from many companies and individuals who share our passion for helping others."

The fundraiser was started in 1985 by then-company president Gene Filippis as a way for the home healthcare company and the Filippis family to help support area non-profits. Widely known as a man who was extremely devoted to the community, Gene established the Filippis Foundation (then known as the Rehabilitation Research Center) to support awareness, training and educational programs for persons with disabilities. Gene passed away at the age of 59 in June 1997.

Gene and A.J.'s sister, Nancy Hakala, organized the golf outing for many years, building a foundation that has helped insure its continued growth and success.

In addition to the Filippis Foundation, the beneficiaries of this year's event are the Athletes with Disabilities Hall of Fame; Alternatives in Motion; Asthma Network of West Michigan; Detroit Lions Charities; Michigan Paralyzed Veterans of America; Otsego Memorial Hospital Foundation; and Wheelin' Team 457.

2009 Gene Filippis Memorial Golf Benefit Beneficiaries
  • The Filippis Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by Wright & Filippis. It offers a multitude of services, programs and education that allow the disadvantaged and physically challenged the independence to see their dreams turn to reality.
  • The Athletes with Disabilities Hall of Fame's mission is to honor athletes with disabilities who have demonstrated achievement in sports and are positive role models in the community, as well as to educate the public about sports for the disabled.
  • Alternatives in Motion provides wheelchairs to individuals who do not qualify for other assistance, and who could not obtain such equipment without financial aid. They accept donations of new and gently used manual and power wheelchairs in excellent condition and rely entirely on private donations and support.
  • Asthma Network of West Michigan educates those caring for individuals with asthma and intensively case-manages low-income children and adults with moderate to severe asthma. The achievement of both these goals leads to a decrease in the morbidity and mortality associated with asthma.
  • Detroit Lions Charities was established in 1990 to assist all age groups in a diverse range of needs and programs in Michigan. Particular emphasis is placed on programs that benefit the children and youth of Detroit.
  • Michigan Paralyzed Veterans of America has served Michigan for 45 years, "making a difference" in the lives of veterans, their families, and the public. They are a leadership organization reaching out on behalf of their members (veterans with spinal cord injury or disorders), associate members, and all people with disabilities to provide the highest possible quality of life in Michigan.
  • The Ostego Memorial Hospital Foundation is charged with raising support to help fund the tangible items - what you touch, feel, and hear at OMH - all of which facilitate your intangible healthcare experiences at OMH, the ones you can't quite put into words.
  • Wheelin' Team 457 provides the physically challenged with indoor and outdoor sports and recreation. It provides education and guidance to the community, state, and nation and strives to touch the world.
