Upper Extremity

Upper extremity (including fingers, partial hand, wrist disarticulation, Trans radial, elbow disarticulation, Trans humeral, shoulder and forequarter) amputations range from vascular to trauma, young to old, sports enthusiasts to basic ambulation. Every patient has his or her own ideas of success, so each patient is assessed by their clinician to create a customized Prosthesis and Rehabilitation program that is consistent with their individual goals.

Committed to helping you realize your functional potential

The advancements in technology with upper extremity prosthetic components have been amazing with the development of microprocessor-controlled hands and elbows. These advancements enhance the functional capabilities of the upper extremity patient. This enhancement is only possible with a properly fitted socket. Wright & Filippis upper extremity specialists will conduct a thorough evaluation of the residual limb, listen to the patient’s goals and objectives, and together they will determine what system best fits his/her needs.

conventional body powered prosthesis

Conventional/Body-Powered Prosthesis

A conventional or body powered prosthesis controls the elbow and terminal device through a harness and cabling system.

electrically power prosthesis

Electrically Powered Prosthesis

The myoelectric prosthesis functions through electrodes, which operate a motor to create movement by opening and closing the hand, rotating the wrist or flexing and extending the elbow. These actions occur by contracting muscles in the residual limb, which then initiates the process to create function.

Advancements have made it where fingers with some myoelectric hands no longer work as a unit but may move individually.

hybrid prosthesis

Hybrid Prosthesis

The hybrid upper extremity prosthesis will incorporate both conventional, as well as electrically powered control functions for the same prosthesis.

Meet our Upper Extremity Specialist

Rob is great, understanding, and easy to work with. He will not steer you wrong!

I met Rob when I was in the hospital healing after my surgery and we really connected. He acted like I was a friend or family member. He will not sugar coat it and will tell you exactly what needs to be done, but he knows his information very well and will make sure you are comfortable the entire way and you will be very happy with the end result!
